UCF IT AVP and COO Search Update
As you heard before the break, Michael Sink was selected as the new Associate Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for UCF IT. Michael will start in this new role on February 6, 2017, and provide key leadership to the formation of UCF IT. He joins us from the University of South Florida where he served as the Assistant Vice President for Infrastructure Operations. While at USF, he helped lead an organizational restructuring and centralization of USF’s information technology division. This experience will prove to be valuable to the campus community as we continue to build UCF IT. Again, congratulations and welcome Michael Sink!
UCF IT Application Delivery Update
The effort to transition cohort 1 staff performing the functions identified as Application Delivery continues. The transition team continues to work with the cohort 1 and CS&T leadership on identifying staff and developing an interim organization chart once the staff are transitioned. The target date for the transition is February 10th.
The Application Delivery Leadership workgroup continues to meet and discuss what the future state of Application Delivery in UCF IT and the necessary roadmap to achieve it. The other working groups have formed and their first meetings occurred the week of January 9th. Both groups are in the process of identifying a chairperson and the leadership workgroup has provided some initial deliverables around data gathering and the project intake process. The two groups are:
- Application Support Workgroup – providing a review of current practices and processes of application support (hosted and cloud apps) and helping to develop a roadmap for how application support will be built within UCF IT.
- Application Development Workgroup – providing a review of current practices and processes of application development and helping to develop a roadmap for how application development will be built within UCF IT.
January 2017 Superstars
Lori Clark – Lori is currently a member of the SDES IT Application Services team. She is the epitome of our core value of user-focused service orientation because she is constantly thinking about ways to improve things for the staff she supports. After the recent transition of the SDES call ticket system to ServiceNow, Lori saw an opportunity to provide some quick tips for the staff in helping them navigate the new UCF IT self-service portal. She took the initiative to develop a great knowledge article for the staff that provided some basic information on the features available and how the staff can navigate to take advantage of them. Her effort has now become a baseline knowledge document that the UCF IT Support Center will use to help educate staff moving forward.
Chris Tellez – Chris has gone above and beyond in several areas within both Infrastructure Services and the Support Center, showing his commitment to the core value of Robustness. He is actively participating in the Support Center Leadership working group representing Infrastructure Services, the Knowledge Management working group, the UCF IT website working group and is currently the chair of the Devices Subcommittee of the Client Experience working group. He continually helps where he can including assistance with concept drawings, workflows, end user documentation, and guidance on policy and procedures. And he is doing all of this with a newborn at home!
Hack Day Highlights
On Monday, December 19, UCF IT held its second ‘Hack Day’ event with great success. Hack Days are 8-hour events (over two days) where staff (technical and non-technical alike!) are encouraged to work on an idea or project that typically would not have time allotted. Participants are encouraged to be innovative and creative with their ideas and to collaborate with others. This event saw six developers and admins participate with projects presented at the end of the event.
Brian Blum and Sunghyeon Kim presented two projects of note. Brian explored the use and feasibility of moving UCF’s externally facing DNS servers to the Azure DNS cloud service. He believes that this move could potentially save the university thousands of dollars in maintenance and upkeep costs while reducing our attack surface. Sunghyeon experimented with connecting Visio diagrams that represent UCF’s ERP architecture with the inventory spreadsheets that are kept up to date. This will be extremely helpful as the diagrams can be updated with the latest information about our systems anytime the underlying data changes.
We hope to continue to build on the success of this biannual event and we invite everyone to join us for the next Hack Day event in the spring.
